Backstage: Gail Sorronda - Chromophobia

Brisbane’s avant-garde fashion visionary Gail Sorronda celebrated two decades of design mastery with the unveiling of her 2025 Resort Collection, Chromophobia. Held at the industrial-chic Urban Art Projects in Northgate, the evening unfolded as an atmospheric journey where light, shadow, and movement told the story of a label that has never followed convention.

Guests were welcomed with champagne and canapƩs before the runway came alive with 24 models, each styled to perfection with Stellar tools and brought to life by the artistry of John Pulitano. The hair designs became an extension of the garments, architectural, fluid, and dramatic, perfectly complementing the moody romanticism of the collection. Adding to the sense of theatre, the Australasian Dance Collective delivered a stirring live performance, weaving choreography into the narrative and amplifying the emotional depth of the night.

Gail’s work has always been steeped in atmosphere and feeling. As she has expressed, ā€œDark romantic synthesis. A feeling will often inspire the process first… sometimes it’s the accidents, or sometimes it’s building upon a study explored in the past reimagined.ā€ In Chromophobia, these words found their perfect embodiment. Each piece felt like a living memory, interpreted through fabric, shadow, and light, and reimagined for the present moment.

The reaction from those in attendance was one of awe. Social media filled with descriptions such as ā€œimmersive,ā€ ā€œhypnotic,ā€ and ā€œcinematic.ā€ The venue itself became an extension of the runway, its raw industrial backdrop heightening the drama of the monochrome designs. For Stellar, it was a proud moment to see our tools helping create this transformation, supporting the artistry of one of Australia’s most distinctive designers.

This landmark anniversary also marks a continuation of Gail’s creative journey. Later this month, she will collaborate again with the Australasian Dance Collective for Calile Culture: Cut from Movement, an immersive performance blending choreography, costume, and conversation. From the runway to the stage, Gail Sorronda continues to shape Australian fashion and art in ways that are fearless, poetic, and unmistakably her own.
